Does the Military Pay to Ship Pets?

 

Yes, active-duty service members completing an eligible PCS may be authorized reimbursement for transporting one household pet.
 

Since 2024, U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) guidance allows reimbursement of up to $550 for a qualifying move within the continental United States (CONUS) and up to $2,000 for a move to or from an overseas location (OCONUS).
 

Keep in mind that your reimbursement is not automatic. Eligibility, covered expenses, and required receipts are governed by the Joint Travel Regulations. Before booking:

 

• Ask your transportation or finance office what your orders authorize

• Confirm which pet-related expenses qualify

• Keep itemized quotes, invoices, and receipts

• Ask whether approval is needed before travel

• Verify how many pets your benefit covers
